The Black Paper

I am sure that many Americans sat, glued to their televisions last night when Barack Obama gave his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination for U.S. President. I know that I did. It was a transformational moment in American history, some would call it a “Mastery Moment.”  www.politico.com/news/stories/0808/12962.html

As I move to releasing my Black Mastery audio program, I was reminded, by his speech about the meaning of Mastery and I believe that Barack Obama is a true definition of a Master.

What is Mastery?

My colleague, Nigel Henry, is the creator of a technology called Mastery Unleashed™,  www.masteryunleashed.com, which is a set of tools and practices that unleash Mastery performance in all who come in contact with it. He tells a simple story to illustrate the definition of Mastery:

Did you see the movie “Ray? As you probably know it was a film about the life of the brilliant musician Ray Charles. In it, Ray made a statement that made him rich. He said “Bring me the masters.” What was he asking for when he asked for this? He was asking for the original copy of his creation. This term Master applies to things and people.

One definition is that a master is an original copy. An original copy of what, you ask? An original copy of the creator.

Therefore, in this definition, Mastery is “The degree to which I am being like the creator. Like God.”

In other words, the degree to which I am causing powerful results to occur with thoughts, beliefs, language, and actions.

What are some of the attributes of masters? Masters create massive results in a short amount of time: otherwise known as a miracle. This miracle is what we call Mastery Performance.

Barack has created a massive result, in a short amount of time, and by most standards, his victory was a miracle. A black man, relatively unknown, and considered by many to be too inexperienced to compete with the wife of one of the most popular presidents in U.S. history in a country with a legacy of deep racist tendencies. Many didn’t believe it could happen. Most called it a long shot. I call it Mastery Performance.

You see, Barack is not just another pretty face and certainly not just a celebrity candidate, although he is extraordinarily charismatic, a powerful orator, and inspires tremendous fascination. The reality is that he has been extremely savvy, technologically literate in the era of Web 2.0 and represents an evolutionary voice in politics. I will discuss this more in upcoming blog posts.
